Saltery Bay is where the Upper Sunshine Coast "starts." It's the place where ferry traffic arrives from Vancouver, and today there is a small settlement of people who live there.

Saltery Bay was named after the fish saltery camp owned by McNair. In 1954, the present ferry system opened the road for travellers. Prior to that the only way to get to Powell River was by steamship
