Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Peggy ( Katheen ) Bird ( nee Banham )( 1923-2013 ) came to Powell River in 1945 as the new war bride of Duncan Bird ( 1920-2009 ) who was born in Powell River. Duncan served in the Canadian Navy during World War 2. Life was difficult for a city girl having initially no plumbing, but she was able to adapt. Peggy and Duncan had five children, Bill, Ritchie, Marnie ( 1951-2011 ), Peter and Tom. With the help of some very good friends she raised the five children and many others. Peggy enjoyed life; there were all her pen pals, the goat club, apple-core club, dance and card club along with Toastmistress Club, Wildwood Ratepayers, and Powell River Historical Museum and Archives. Later she was known as Granny Bird at James Thomson Elementary School, with many Wildwood school children under her wings. She also organized the Wildwood Grannies for planning the May Day teas at the school. Peggy will be remembered for her monthly letter writing to family, friends and also to all the shut-ins at the United Church.
