Holy Cross Cemetery Society Fonds.—1927-1988.- - 7 cm of textual records [ photocopied] , two photographs
In 1924 a group of settlers from Romania, having come to Canada via Saskatchewan, settled in the Kelly Creek area. When death occurred it was vital that a cemetery be made and in 1927, Marco Zilinsky, John Nassichuk and John Barchuk purchased from the Provincial Government 2.5 acres of Block A District Lot 5244 for the use as a cemetery site. They formed the Holy Cross Cemetery Association in 1928 and were registered as Tenants in Common. No charge was made for the plots and the work was all done by volunteer labour. Burials continued up until approximately 1954. The cemetery fell into a state of disrepair until the early 1970’s when family members of the dead buried there, became concerned about its state. Because the original Tenants in Common were dead, the untangling of legal affairs took some time. Because the Powell River Regional District did not want to take over this cemetery, in 1974 a new Holy Cross Cemetery Society was formed.
The fonds consists of records of the Holy Cross Cemetery Society fonds and includes textual records, blue-prints of plot plans and two photographs. Fonds arranged in the following series: 1. Legal Documents 2. Correspondence 3. District Lot 5244 4. Lists 5. History 6. Clippings 7. Photographs.
