Powell River Academy of Music fonds. - - 1982-2004. - - 15cm of textual records.

The Powell River Academy of Music was the result of a community choral program programme for youth established in 1974. The Powell River Boy’s Choir was formed the same year in 1974, the Powell River Girl’s Choir in 1977, The Powell River Youth Choir in 1980, the Academy Singers in 1984 and in 1995 the Academy Chamber Choir. In 1974 Ken Peterson was the conductor, Don James accompanist and Harold Carson. These choirs went on international tours and sang on TV and radio. In January 1981 the executive committees of the earliest choirs formed the Powell River Academy of Music in order to strengthen the music education in the community. The first classes were held in Ocean View School and then St. David’s Church ( 1983-1986 ) In 1987 the Academy moved into one of the Timberlane bunk houses and then in 1996 they moved to the now empty J.C. Hill School on Manson and Kemano. In 2004 they purchased this school from School District # 47. As well as the above named choirs the Academy hosts two festivals. International Choral
Kathaumixw formed in 1984, in 1994, under the leadership of Peter Taylor the annual Vocal Jazz Summit was formed and in 2004 the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific came into being. Over the years the Powell River Academy of Music choirs have continued to be international ambassadors for Powell River and Powell River has become reknowned for the caliber of its festivals and music programmes.


The fonds consists of records of the Powell River Academy of Music. Includes the sous-fonds of the festival Kathaumixw and the sous fonds of the festival of the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific.

Series consists of a proposal for funding in order to acquire a facility and equipment to provide the following: performance and recital spaces, meeting rooms, studio space for visiting professionals, space for ensemble work in vocal, jazz, woodwind and brass, music library, office space for Kathaumixw and a place for local artists to display their work.

Kathaumixw sous fonds - - 1984-2004. - - 4cm of textual records.
Kathaumixw is a ‘Tla’amin word meaning “A gathering together of different peoples.” It is a five day choral festival with up to 40 choirs from around the world, guest conductors and the orchestra in residence, guest conductors and the orchestra in residence.
The sous fonds consists of records of Kathaumixw. Includes syllabus, programes, fact sheets and newspaper clippings.
