Powell River Cablenet Channel 10 “Looking Back “ Collection - - - 1984 – 1994. - - 18 video cassettes and 2 scrap books.

Television was brought to Powell River by Gordon Turner in 1955. In 1975 a group of interested citizens thought that the TV station could be utilized for community programming. Turner introduced cable facilities and started equipping a studio for use by the public. Channel 10 had been available for some time and the citizens started broadcasting public programmes. Turner, being legally responsible for all broadcast content maintained quality and content control. In 1982 Powell River Cablenet purchased Powell River TV and for some years they supported volunteers in producing the ‘Looking Back’ programmes. These programmes were hosted by a local interviewer and local individuals were interviewed and their stories broadcast. In 1997 COGECO Cable Solutions took the station over , and Shaw Cablesystems purchased the station from them in 1999.

The collection consists of 18 video cassettes of people who were interviewed and two scrapbooks that were copied from the original scrapbooks.

ARCHIVES NOTES: At the time the Museum did not accession these tapes. Later on permission was asked of the latest owner and they felt that they could not give the Museum permission to have the tapes as they did not make them. Powell River Cablenet did not have the interviewees sign release forms.
