Golden R. Stanley Fonds

Accession number 1998.16
Fonds number 57

Introduction

The Golden Stanley fonds includes records dating from 1900-1986. The records consist of 1.4 metres of textual material, six photograph albums, ca 2,000 photographs, of which about 200 are prints, 552 are slides and remainder are negatives. The fonds was donated to the Powell River Museum and Archives upon the death of Mr. Stanley in 1986. Some material was also transferred to the archives during Golden Stanley’s tenure as archivist. Along with approximately 20,000 books, the remaining archival material was boxed at this home by Peggy Bird and Karen Southern. However, it appears that much of his archives including most of his correspondence were destroyed prior to this. The fonds was donated by Golden Stanley’s son Rodger with no restriction on access. The records have been place in acid-free folders and boxes. Many staples and other metal fasteners have been removed. In addition to this inventory, a file location guide has been created, listing all series, sub-series, files, inclusive date and file identification numbers. A listing and description of the negatives in the photograph collection compiled by Michael Gourlie appears in Appendix A.

Biographical Sketch

Golden Roy Colin Stanley was born in Vancouver to James Colin Stanley and Sarah ( nee Babcock ) Stanley in 1910. Many of his friends called him ‘ Goldy’. On March 18, 1941 he married Verna Rodgers who died in July 1957. In September of that year he married Margaret Roberts of Roberts Creek but they were separated by 1979. Golden had one son Rodger Stanley from his first marriage. Golden Stanley died May 29 1986.

The first six years of Golden’s life were spent on 23
rd Avenue in Vancouver. In 1916 the family moved to the Horseshoe Valley near Stillwater south of Powell River where they homesteaded. They moved to Stillwater about five years later and then to Vancouver in the early 1930’s to continue Golden’s education. In 1936, Golden moved back to Powell River and began work in the Mill. In 1940, Golden built his home on Gilbert Street in Cranberry where he remained until his death.

Golden’s education began at Stillwater School and continued at Vancouver’s John Oliver and South Vancouver High School. He graduated and attended his first year of university at the University of British Columbia in the early 1930’s. Due to lack of funds, he was forced to curtail his education and move to Powell River, where he found work as a logger and in the mid-1930’s got a job in the Mill’s technical lab. He became the town’s first archivist in 1962 and remained in this position until his death.

Golden Stanley was a many of many talents and interests. Among other things he became knowledgeable in botany, biology, music, photography, geology, geography, book-binding and writing. He acquired a large library of books on a wide range of topics and took a keen interest in the local history. He was also active in scouting in the late 1940s’ and early 1950’s.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The fonds consists of eleven series or records comprising textual and photographic material generated over the course of Golden Stanley’s lifetime as well as some of his parents’ records dating back to the early Twentieth Century. The organization of this material reflects Golden Stanley’s strong belief in classifying and cataloguing material by subject, with some of it arranged by form and function. However, original order is difficult to fully ascertain, given the small amount of material and his tendency to file some of his own records in the archives’ subject files. Series includes: biology and botany material, chemistry notebooks, diaries, Esperanto material, Herman Leisk archaeology material, writings, photographs, miscellaneous records books and other miscellaneous material. The date range spans about 1900 to 1986.
The material was mostly acquired by the Museum in 1986 along with a large collection of Golden’s books. Some items, particularly photographs, were incorporated into the Museum’s holdings by Golden himself at earlier dates. These were never accessioned. After acquisition, the material was housed at Dwight Hall and later in the museum basement.
