Townsite Heritage Society fonds. – 1990 – 1995. – 16.5 cm of textual records.

Citizens who were concerned about the state of the Townsite started the Townsite Heritage Society in 1990. The vision statement of Sept 1990 said:’ We wish to enhance and maintain the character and integrity of the traditional neighbourhood and business section of the Townsite, respecting its Garden City roots, with the idea of making appropriate modern adaptations.’ Karen Southern was the first President and the Corporation of the District of Powell River hired her to initiate the first steps in the revitalization process, however the position was not renewed. Susan Jersak and Shelley Halliday were subsequent Presidents. In 1992 the Regional District Office was the first heritage building to be proclaimed by the Council. The Society was very active and accomplished the following: an inventory of the buildings in the Townsite was completed by Mrs Southern and architect Lewis Vilegas; Townsite Days was featured, a paint-up campaign was started, a Townsite Walking Tour brochure was produced, the Townsite Heritage Digester was published, Garden and Home Awards were re-instated, Once Upon a Townsite events were established, a Landscape Inventory was done, Historic Townsite signage was realized, the former Triangle Gardens began to be cleaned up, the Street Tree programme was initiated, and negotiations began with the Municipality for new bylaws governing a Development Permit Area for the entire Townsite. The Townsite received a Federal designation of a ‘National Historic District’ in Oct 1995. This was the first designation of this nature west of the Maritimes.
