International Brotherhood of Papermakers - Union Local 142 ( 1912 -

The International Brotherhood of Papermakers, Local 142, was originally organized in 1912 and in 1913 members went on strike in order to institute three eight-hour shifts. This was successful. In 1918 a dispute about Sunday operations saw a series of strikebreakers called in from Quebec and the Union voted to turn in its charter. Re-organized in 1937, E.A. Hansen was the president, a wage increase was negotiated and in 1942 base wage was increased from 54 cents per hour to 60 cents per hour and women were hired for the first time on the basis of equal pay for equal work. In 1957 the name was changed to United Papermakers – Papermakers Union and in 1973 the number changed to #1126 and the name was changed to United Paperworkers International Union. In 1974 the name was changed to Canadian Paperworkers Union Local #1. In 1992 they joined with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) as Local 76.

International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers - Union Local 76 ( 1918 -

This union began in 1918 but in 1921 the mill owners advised that all relations with the union would be broken. The union dissolved. In 1935 the Province of BC passed the BC Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. In 1933 Member of Parliament for the Powell River area was a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation ( C.C. F. ). The mill manager at the time fired all mill workers that he considered ‘left wingers’ and after that he fired all whom he considered to be ‘ foreigners’. In 1937 Local 76 reorganized and Colin Johnston was voted in as President. In 1992 they joined with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada ( CEP) as Local 1.

Over the years the various owners of the Mill have negotiated with both of these unions and issued single Standard Labour Agreements to both.
