Jaan Ulo Veiderma ( 1925 - 2005 ) was born in Estonia. In 1941 when the Russian communists took over his country he escaped in 1943 to Finland. He served in the Finnish Navy but when he realized that the young men of Estonia might be forced to go back to Germany and serve in Hitler’s SS ( (Shutzstaffel) or Praetorian Guard which was Hitler's personal bodyguard unit) he escaped in a coal ship and after three days with no food or water was found on the ship by the dock workers. He was taken to an immigration camp and eventually went to the University of Stockholm where he took chemistry courses and where he met his wife. They had a daughter, Margareta, and emigrated to Canada in 1951. They moved to Powell River in 1953 the same year that their second child ( Hans 1953-2007 ) was born. A chemist by trade he worked at the Powell River pulp and paper mill for MacMillian Bloedel Ltd in the lab as a pulp tester until his retirement in 1990. In the late 1980’s he became interested in local environmental issues and worked with the Enviro Fair Committee in 1989 and 1990.
