The Westview Volunteer Fire Brigade was started in 1938 and when Westview incorporated as a Village in 1942 obtained some operational funding. The volunteers attended practices on a weekly basis and took Fire College courses. The first Fire Chief was Jimmy Cant. With the amalgamation of the four villages, Powell River, Westview, Cranberry and Wildwood, into the Municipality in 1955, Jack Newall, head of the Westview Department, was appointed first Chief of the new Municipal Fire Department. Westview’s Hall became Number 2. Newall retired in 1960 and Stan Davies took over as Chief with Gordon (Dint) Hunter as the Deputy Chief. Hunter became Chief in 1969. Two Fire Colleges were held in Powell River in 1955 and 1971. The Volunteer Department held and participated in numerous events with their members and friends, including the Mermaid Derby, beach parties, seafood parties, Sea Fair, Christmas parties and Tree Pick-up, New Years parties and a Fifty Year Reunion. The Westview Volunteer Fire Department disbanded in 1993.
